Border police and the airport
EUCAP Sahel Mali names the Direction Générale de la Police Nationale and the Direction de la Police des Frontières (PAF) as the Malian police bodies that supported the waiting area for refused passengers at Bamako airport, opened on 30 August 2024 1. EUCAP said it would work with Malian authorities on a training module for border police staff assigned to the area 1.
Airports of Mali is the airport operator. Its chairman and CEO, Colonel Major Lassina Togola, signed the 27 April 2026 statement on reinforced checks on roads to the airport 3. During the attack of 17 September 2024, a transport ministry spokesman, Mohamed Ould Mamouni, said flights were suspended over gunfire near the airport, as reported by the Associated Press 8.
Foreign ministry and visas
The UK FCDO says visa applications and payment are made online through the Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, and that an entry permit is issued electronically once approved 2. The ministry's consular portal lists visa information by nationality and passport type and consular services for Malians abroad, such as laissez-passer and consular cards 6.
In October 2025 the Foreign Affairs Ministry said Mali would require US visa applicants to post a bond of up to US$10,000, citing reciprocity with a US measure, as reported by the Associated Press 7. The US State Department says Mali suspended visa issuance to US citizens from 1 January 2026, with limited exceptions 9.
Land borders, customs and gendarmerie
An undated IOM project document on the Mali and Mauritania border lists the ministries of the interior, the ministries of defence for the gendarmerie and the ministries of finance for customs as partners, with the Direction de la Police des Frontières in Mali 5. It describes MIDAS as a system to record cross-border passenger flows electronically 5.
The UK says cultural or archaeological objects need an export permit from the Ministry of Arts and Culture, obtained from the director of the National Museum 2. In March 2025 an adviser on migration at Mali's ministry for Malians abroad, Dr Boulaye Keita, spoke for the government on Malians expelled from Mauritania, as reported by Koaci 10.
